In our small ways as individuals or families, we can do the following things to help stop climate change from progressing.

1. Buy air con and refrigerator with inverter to save on electricity

Works for me, my family and siblings. Purchase fridge or refrigerator with built-in inverter and auto-defrost features. It cuts our monthly electric bills into half. Hence, it’s pocket friendly indeed.

2. Drink natural fruit juice, shakes, smoothies

Have fresh fruits shakes and smoothies with the family at home when the weather is hot so the blender usage is only on a very minimal level. Or you can always have a fresh fruit juice using cold water in your fridge.

3. Diligently plant fruit trees in your garden

Grow your own strawberries and grapes in small pots. You may even plant calamansi, oranges, mandarin, papaya, apples in big pots.

4. Minimize the use of electric appliances

Use your gas range or gas stove more often than electric appliances e.g. electric stove, electric water heater, rice cooker, coffee maker, waffle maker, microwave, hot and cold water dispenser etc. Use these power-hungry appliances for emergency only.

Grill fish and meats outside of the house using indigenous or renewable materials rather than cooking them on electric appliances.

5. Use low wattage lights and appliances

Always purchase and use only the very low wattage lights and appliances. A 5 to 7-watt light bulb is advisable for the bathroom, stockroom, garage, and an overnight light in the garden or in the backyard. These bulbs consume very little electricity. It works for my family all these years.

6. Buy solar light bulbs for outdoor use

Go for solar bulb lights for outdoors like your garden, backyard, porch, and garage as it only consumes electricity direct from the sunlight itself.

7. Focus on producing your own food

Grow your own vegetables and herbs in your garden. You may plant vegetables in your garden in small pots. You can beautify your kitchen too with healthy herb plants like basil, celery, parsley, chili, jalapeno, etc.

8. Engage in more activities outdoors

Have outdoor activities more often and unplug appliances when you and your family go out.

9. Turn off the lights when not in use

If you are not using home appliances and electronics, turn it off. When you are eating meals in the kitchen, turn off your lights, appliances, e-tablet, X-box, mp3, ps3, laptop and computer in your bedroom. When you go outside to the garden, turn the electricity consuming gadgets off.

Properly using the rain water by simply recycling it with your watering the plants, your carwash, bathing your pets, cleaning the pets house, garage, living room carpet, house curtains, rags on the floor, your floor mop, etc. Doing so will reduce the need for electricity to extract underground water or fill the water tanks with water from lower levels.

Ideally, you may have a huge water tank so rain will automatically flow on it, or a drum for this will do.

You may likewise turn off your fridge, coffeemaker, waffle maker, oven, toaster, and your water dispenser at nighttime and then turn it on again when you wake up early in the morning.

Unplug appliances from kitchen and living room outlets when you go to bed e.g. fans, fridge, water dispenser, water heater, tv, radio, laptop, computers, etc. Plugging them in consumes electricity even when not in use. Doing so reduces your utility bills.
